Dr. Stanley Carson
 Dr. Stanley Carson was born in Lansford, PA, a small coal mining town in northeastern Pennsylvania. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after serving four years. He then received a General Motors scholarship to the University of Southern California and, after three years, was accepted into the USC School of Medicine.

Following graduation, he did a one year rotatting internship at the LAC-USC Medical Center followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at the same institution. He then did a fellowship in Diseases and surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
Upon returning to Southern California, he was appointed to the faculty at USC and was in charge of the retina clinic. During this time, he developed a straight Ophthalmology internship at the Medical Center.
Dr. Carson was the first retina doctor to establish private fluorescein angiographic clinics in Southern California. Also, he was among the first doctors in California to perform vitrectomy surgery in 1974.
He founded South Coast Retina Center in 1971. The group now includes six board certified, fellowship trained retina-vitreous physicians serving the coastal communities of southern Los Angeles County and northern Orange County. Dr. Carson was an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and also served as chief of staff of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. At present, his primary interests are macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. John McBeath
 Dr. John McBeath is a founding member of South Coast Retina Center having joined Dr. Stanley Carson in the Long Beach, CA practice in 1978. He completed medical training at George Washington University in Washington , DC as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He then became a flight surgeon in the US Air Force including a tour based in Taiwan but involved extensive time in Viet Nam and Thailand during the war. He returned to complete his phthalmology residency and subsequent retina fellowship at the number one rated Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami, Florida. There he had one of a kind retina training under Edward Norton, MD, Donald Gass, MD and the “father of vitrectomy” Robert Machemer, MD.

He states it has been a privilege to “live through” the entire history of vitrectomy and the many advances in the field of retina care to the present time when so much can be offered in clinical care of patients to preserve vision.
Dr. McBeath actively taught clinical and surgical retina to residents of the University of California, Irvine Ophthalmology program and Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach. He was selected “best instructor” by the residents numerous years.
Dr. McBeath maintains his interest and main focus on clinical practice and personal care of patients concentrating on diabetes, retinal detachment, macular degeneration and vein occlusion. He participates in current clinical research studies conducted by the practice. He is a Board Certified member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Los Angeles County Medical Association.

Dr. Fox M. Boswell
 Dr. Boswell is about as local a boy as you can find. Born at the old Seaside Hospital, which has moved and is now is Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. He went to Poly High School and attended UC Irvine. Dr. Boswell attended Loma Linda Medical School, followed by an Internship at L.A. County Hospital. He completed his ophthalmology residency at UC Irvine. Dr. Boswell left Southern California for a 2 year Fellowship in Disease and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous, at Wills Eye Hospital, from 1982-1984. His wife Jan and he had their first child, Alicia, while in Philadelphia. She was born at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She is now a graduate student at UC San Diego. He, then, returned home to join Dr. Carson and Dr. McBeath in 1984. Dr. Boswell has lived in Long Beach since his return and his son, Morgan was born at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Boswell’s career in retinal diseases coincided with the development of vitreous surgery, the AIDS epidemic, and now the era of intraocular injection to treat Infection, Diabetic Retinopathy, Inflammatory Diseases and Macular Degeneration. It continues to be a marvelous experience for him. On many days, many patients of Dr. Boswell are more concerned with how he is doing than about their own recovery. Dr. Nguyen graduated in only three years with Magna Cum Laude honors in biology at the University of California at Irvine. Then, he went on and was awarded his medical degree from the highly prestigious the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. There, he researched at the internationally respected Wilmer Eye Institute. After obtaining his MD degree, Dr. Nguyen returned to his family and home in California. He completed his medical internship at the University of California Los Angeles – St. Mary Medical Center. Dr. Nguyen was recognized as the Medical Intern of the Year for providing excellent comprehensive care for his patients, excelling as a clinician and being always helpful to his colleagues and staff. Dr. Nguyen completed his ophthalmology residency the University of Southern California Doheny Eye Center. Inspired by the sight saving role of retinal surgery and fascinated by the ever evolving technological advances of the specialty, Dr. Nguyen sought and completed his medical and surgical retina fellowship at the University of British Columbia Vancouver Eye Center. There, he trained with five other retinal surgeons and benefitted from one of the busiest and highest surgical volume program in both Canada and the United States. Since 2000, Dr. Nguyen has been a member of the South Coast Retina Center. His clinical expertise includes complex retinal detachment repair, diabetic retinopathy, macula holes, management of macular degeneration and other retinal disorders. Despite all of his accomplishment, Dr. Nguyen always reminds himself that it is the person we treat and not just the disease. He believes in giving time, respect and his best effort to each patient- always. On occasion, even in these days of twitter and smartphones, Dr. Nguyen still makes old-fashioned personal house calls. Dr. Roh graduated with Cum Laude honors from Duke University where he majored in Biology and minored in East Asian Studies. He was awarded the prestigious Sirena WuDunn Memorial Scholarship for his academic excellence and for his contributions to the Asian Pacific Studies Institute at Duke University. Dr. Roh then earned his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine with Honors and was in the top 10th percentile of his graduating class in grade point average and on his USMLE Board scores. Dr. Roh completed a preliminary internal medicine year at Evanston Northwestern Hospital, and then his ophthalmology residency at George Washington University. He served as chief resident during his ophthalmology residency. Dr. Roh published his work during residency in the Journal of Oculoplastics and Reconstructive Surgery and presented this material at an international conference in Gothenberg, Sweden in 2003. Dr. Roh received his fellowship training in Birmingham, Alabama where he completed a clinical fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery with the Retina Specialists of Alabama and through the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Dr. Roh completed a research fellowship sponsored by the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education and the American Society of Ocular Trauma. In 2005, Dr. Roh lectured throughout China as a representative of the Helen Keller Foundation. Dr. Julie Gasperini
 Dr. Gasperini is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous. She grew up in the rural Upper Peninsula of Michigan and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology, Summa Cum Laude, from Michigan State University Honors College. She attended Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, where she was awarded her medical degree and completed an internship in Internal Medicine. Thereafter, Dr. Gasperini went on to complete residency training in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University, where she was elected co-chief resident. She completed a two year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute/ University of Southern California. After completing her fellowship training, Dr. Gasperini joined South Coast Retina Center and is the first and only female retina surgeon in the practice. She sees patients in their Torrance and Long Beach offices and performs outpatient surgeries at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Surgery Center of South Bay, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Surgery Center Long Beach, Greater Long Beach Surgery Center, Los Alamitos Medical Center, and Newport Bay Surgery Center. She is the principal investigator for clinical trials in their research department.
